The Study of the Word of God
~A look at the power, purpose and process of the Word of God~
The Word of God. Throughout the centuries the world has tried to stop it, to disregard it, to dishonor it, to weaken it, to remove it from society. Kings and leaders of the past have tried to burn it, to destroy it, to kill those who dared to proclaim it. The very satanic forces of the world have aligned themselves against it to stop it from being fulfilled, to deceive those who would attempt to understand it, and to prevent it from being spread throughout the world. But the very God of the Universe has declared that every word written will be fulfilled.
The Flood of Information...
Even as you read this, the world is being bombarded by the fruit of the information age: by radio, television, computer, newspaper, magazines, telephone -- every conceivable avenue is being used to get the information of the world into your life, for the world knows that whomever you receive information from you will identify with, think like, be like and follow.
The Lord God also knows this; that is why He has preserved His eternal Word for us -- that we might recognize, understand and share the Truth of His Word and be able to withstand the onslaught of this unholy hour! Never before has the battle between Holy and unholy, good and evil, right and wrong, moral and immoral, Truth and lies, been so intense!
The Impact of the Word...
Beloved, have you ever wondered why the Bible stirs up so much controversy? It's because Satan knows that the Word of God poses the most serious threat to his plans, and that is why he has turned the world against it so. Never in the history of mankind has a single book been the target of so much attention, curiosity, hatred, ridicule and fear!
Even in this day and time, people are still being arrested, some even killed, for bringing Bibles into certain places, for reading from the Bible, for posting up signs or even wearing clothing with portions of the Bible written on it! Beloved, why has no other book ever stirred up as much response? Because no other book has ever had the authority of the Almighty God behind it! Throughout its history, the Bible has changed countries and nations, inspired countless songs, anthems, movies and studies, established laws and ordinances, foretold the restoration and destruction of kingdoms, survived banning and burnings; it has been outlawed and banished by governments and countries, yet it still reigns as the all-time best selling and most often-quoted book in the entire world. Why?
Because it is the WORD OF THE LIVING GOD, and absolutely NOTHING can stop it!
God's Purpose for Giving It...
It goes without saying that if we as believers were to try and resist this onslaught with our own strength, wisdom and planning, we would fall flat on our faces in disgrace and defeat. Why? Because the nature of this battle is spiritual, not carnal (2 Cor. 10:3-5). It must be fought with spiritual weapons! Whenever God raised up a man to turn back the tide of evil coming over the land, He would always equip him with one thing: His Holy Word!
When the Lord God called the prophet Jeremiah, Jeremiah responded that his natural abilities weren't sufficient for the job, that he was just a child. But listen to God's response:
"But the Lord said unto me, 'Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak ... Then the Lord put forth His hand, and touched my mouth. And the Lord said unto me, 'Behold, I have put My Words in thy mouth. See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant'" (Jer. 1:7-10).
Beloved, the Bible records that when God wanted to create something, He used His Word (Heb. 11:3), and when He wanted to heal or deliver someone, He used His Word (Ps. 107:19-20), and when He wanted to save all of mankind from sin, He sent His Word wrapped in human flesh (John 1:1-4, 14, 1 John 1:1). Jeremiah shows us that when God wanted to judge a nation, He put His Almighty Word in the mouth of a mere man, and that man was changed into an awesome instrument of righteousness for the God of Heaven!
Beloved, when God gave you His Word, He gave you everything you needed and more to overcome the demonic attack of this day!
How His Word Changes Us...
Now, before God uses us in this manner, He asks one simple thing of us: that we make ourselves available to Him, that He may change us for His use. "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God" (Rom. 12:1-2). Understand this: to cause something to conform is to change it by pressure from the outside; to transform something is to change it from the inside. The world wants to change us by pressuring us through social pressure, but God wants to transform us by renewing our minds. And how will He renew our minds? Through His spirit-filled Word!
"Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted Word, which is able to save your souls" (James 1:21). Beloved, God's Words, which are spirit and life (St. John 6:63), are designed to become a part of you when you study them, empowering you with the very life of God, renewing and changing your thoughts and feelings, until you become a living sacrifice, one who is so committed to God and so filled with His Word that His will becomes your will, and your very life becomes the evidence of God's good, perfect, acceptable will for all of humanity to see.
Study His Word, saints! Let it stir up the prophet, preacher, or teacher in you! Let the world know that there is a God, and this is His Holy Word!
